“An off-the-beaten-track fishing experience amongst spectacular scenery.”
Mahseer means Great mouth in India, an apt name for the mighty animal known to be the toughest fighter amongst fresh water sports fish. The Mahseer is the undisputed king of Indian rivers, it is the largest member of the carp family in the world.
Experts have identified about six species in India, but no detailed information on the present status and distribution of these species is available. Though fisherman consider the Golden or Himalayan Mahseer (tor putitora) as the main species available on the Ramganga / Kosi rivers, besides the Silver and Black Mahseer. Goonch (bagaraus bagarius), a fresh water scavenger is also another species that thrives in these rivers.
Best Time October to November & April - June is the best season to venture out for fishing in the Himalayan region.
The Ramganga Fishing resort lies on the banks of the river at 2000 ft above sea level on the northern fringes of the Corbett National Park bordering the districts of Almora and Garhwal. It is a charming spot on a large spit of land jutting out into a bend in the river. Ten rooms and ten tents all have attached bath with hot and cold running water. There is a large swimming pool and a pretty garden sloping down to the river along with a tennis court.
There are 14 kms of river to fish and the largest recorded Mahseer caught weighed 66lbs. You can fish from the garden or walk along the river to various pools, fishing from the riverbank. A short jeep ride downstream takes you to Domunda, another excellent area to fish which lies inside the Corbett National Park.
The Corbett National Park was established in 1936 named after the famous hunter turned naturalist Jim Corbett.
